Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. It contains the medicine Generic Tenormin (Atenolol). Blocks action of Beta-adrenergic receptor within vascular smooth muscle; decreases heart rate; decreases O2 consumption in myocardium (heart muscle).

This medication is a beta-blocker used to treat chest pain (angina) and high blood pressure. It is also used after an acute heart attack to improve survival. High blood pressure reduction helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels. This results in a lowering of the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Active Ingredients: Atenolol
Other Ingredients: Magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, sodium starch glycolate.

Class and Mechanism: Atenolol is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent. Atenolol blocks the action of the sympathetic nervous system, a portion of the involuntary nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates the pace of the heart beat. By blocking the action of these nerves, atenolol reduces the heart rate and is useful in treating abnormally rapid heart rhythms. Atenolol also reduces the force of heart muscle contraction and lowers blood pressure. By reducing the heart rate and the force of muscle contraction, atenolol reduces heart muscle oxygen demand. Since angina occurs when oxygen demand of the heart exceeds supply, atenolol is helpful in treating angina.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

Take Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Take each dose with a full glass of water. Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) can be taken with or without food. Take Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) at the same time everyday whenever possible. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole.
Do not stop taking Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) abruptly unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Stopping Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) abruptly may cause your condition to become worse.
When OVERDOSE is suspected contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusually slow heartbeat, severe dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, weakness, or fainting.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

Depression, Myasthenia Gravis, Anaphylactic Shock due to Allergy Shots, Poor Fetal Growth, Complete Heart Block, Partial Heart Block, Sinus Bradycardia, Chronic Heart Failure Not Currently Controlled by Medication, Occasional Numbness, Prickling, or Tingling of Fingers and Toes, Emphysema, Asthma, Asthma Attack, Severe Chronic Obstructed Lung Disease, Liver Problems, Kidney Disease, Psoriasis, Blood Circulation Failure due to Serious Heart Condition, Pregnancy, Overactive Thyroid Gland, Diabetes
Allergies:
BETA-ADRENERGIC BLOCKING AGENTS

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment:

an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; hives);
wheezing or shortness of breath;
an unusually slow or irregular heart beat;
swelling of your feet and/or lower legs;
leg pain or cramping;
sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week);
chest (heart) pain;
cold or blue feet and hands; or
skin rash.
If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking Generic Tenormin (Atenolol) and talk to your doctor:
fatigue or confusion;
headache or dizziness;
weak pulse or mildly slow heart rate;
diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, or vomiting;
depression;
nightmares; or
impotence (difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection).
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur:
- mibefradil. If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting this drug.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin), anti-diabetic drugs (e.g., glipizide, glyburide, insulin), calcium channel blockers (e.g., diltiazem, verapamil), epinephrine, general anesthesia, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., indomethacin, ibuprofen), other heart drugs (e.g., digoxin, quinidine), other drugs to treat high blood pressure (e.g., clonidine, reserpine).
Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products

Do not share this medication with others. Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction programs, exercise and dietary changes may increase the effectiveness of this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about lifestyle changes that might benefit you. Have your blood pressure and pulse checked regularly while taking this medication. It may be best to learn how to monitor your own blood pressure and pulse. Discuss this with your doctor.
