Class and Mechanism: Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) is a medication that assists with weight-loss by altering neurotransmitters within the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are produced and released by nerves in order to communicate with other nerves. Released neurotransmitters may attach to other nerves or they may be taken up again by the nerves that release them, a process termed reuptake. Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) blocks the reuptake of the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Blocking the reuptake of neurotransmitters alters the balance of neurotransmitters within the nerve cells and thereby affect nerve function and interaction.

Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from heat and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Take Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow with a drink of water. You may take this medicine with meals or food. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Symptoms of a Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) OVERDOSE are not known

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up

Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) should not be taken by people who:
• Have uncontrolled or poorly controlled high blood pressure because Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) substantially increases blood pressure in some patients.
• Are taking prescription medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression, Parkinson’s Disease, or any other disorder.
• Are taking other weight loss medications that act on the brain. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications and herbal products.
• Have had prior allergic reactions to Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) .
• Have a diagnosis of coronary artery disease and/or who have angina pectoris (heart-related chest pain).
• Have arrhythmias (irregular heart beats).
• Have had a prior heart attack.
• Have a diagnosis of congestive heart failure.
• Have severe liver or kidney disease.
• Have had a stroke or symptoms of a stroke (transient ischemic attacks).
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
• Are breast-feeding their infants.
• Are suffering from major eating disorder anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
• Are under 16 years of age.

IMPORTANT: It is very important that you make sure that your primary care doctor and all your other healthcare providers know what medications you take and what medical conditions and allergies you have.

Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) , like all medications, may cause side effects. In studies the most common side effects were: dry mouth, constipation, and insomnia (inability to fall asleep). Other side effects that may occur include: headache, increased sweating, an increase in blood pressure, and an increase in heart rate. These side effects are generally mild, and have usually not caused people to stop taking Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) . If you develop a symptom that you think might be a side effect, stop taking Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) and notify your doctor immediately so he or she can advise you on what to do.

Do not take Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction may occur.

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, Lithonate, others); almotriptan (Axert), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt), sumatriptan (Imitrex), eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), or zolmitriptan (Zomig); venlafaxine (Effexor), duloxetine (Cymbalta), nefazodone (Serzone), mirtazapine (Remeron), or thioridazine (Mellaril); citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), or fluvoxamine (Luvox); amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep), amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), or trimipramine (Surmontil); dihydroergotamine (D.H.E.); an oral anticoagulant or drugs that may increase bleeding such as warfarin (Coumadin), ticlopidine (Ticlid), clopidogrel (Plavix), pentoxifylline (Trental) , aspirin, and others; dextromethorphan (in many cough medicines); meperidine (Demerol); fentanyl (Duragesic); or pentazocine (Talacen, Talwin).

Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) may interact with the medicines listed above and cause a condition called Serotonin Syndrome. This syndrome requires immediate medical attention and may include one or more of the following symptoms: anxiety, restlessness, loss of consciousness, confusion, weakness, tremor, poor coordination, fever, shivering, sweating, vomiting, a fast heartbeat, and others. Do not take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines without first talking to your doctor, especially weight-loss products, tryptophan (L-tryptophan, 5-HTP), decongestants, antidepressants, cough suppressants, lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, others), or migraine medicines.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) . Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.

Do not share this medication with others.
Have your blood pressure and heart rate (pulse) checked regularly while taking this medication. You can learn how to monitor your own blood pressure and pulse. Discuss this with your doctor.
For best results, this medication should be used along with an exercise program and reduced calorie diet as approved by your doctor. Behavior change counseling is also helpful. Consult your doctor for details.

Never take more Generic Meridia (Sabutramine) than prescribed by your doctor.
