What is Generic Lotensin (Benazapril)?

Generic Lotensin is an antihypertensive (blood pressure lowering agent) known as an ACE inhibitor. Lotensin controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels; it is not a cure. High blood pressure levels can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure.

What is Generic Lotensin (Benazapril) used for?

Benazepril can be used alone in treating high blood pressure. Its blood pressure lowering effect can be further enhanced by the addition of a diuretic medication. Lotensin is an example of a medication which combines the effect of benazepril with a thiazide type diuretic (water pill) in treating hypertension. By reducing resistance in the arteries, benazepril can be useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

Generic Lotensin (Benazapril) Facts

Active Ingredients: benazepril hydrochloride.
Other Ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydrogenated castor oil (5-mg, 10-mg, and 20-mg tablets), hypromellose, iron oxides, lactose, magnesium stearate (40-mg tablets), microcrystalline cellulose, polysorbate 80, propylene glycol (5-mg and 40-mg tablets), starch, talc, and titanium dioxide.
Class and Mechanism: Benazepril is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor. ACE is an enzyme in the body which is important for the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes constriction of arteries in the body, thereby elevating blood pressure. ACE inhibitors such as benazepril lower blood pressure by inhibiting the formation of angiotensin II, thus relaxing the arteries. Relaxing the arteries not only lowers blood pressure, but also improves the pumping efficiency of a failing heart and improves cardiac output in patients with heart failure.

Generic Lotensin (Benazapril) Storage

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How to take Generic Lotensin (Benazapril)?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Lotensin can be taken with or without food. Vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated. This can lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while you are taking Lotensin. Drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water daily while you are taking this medication.
If OVERDOSE: Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a Lotensin overdose may include feeling extremely dizzy or light-headed, or fainting.

What to do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Who should not take Generic Lotensin (Benazapril)?

If you are unable to urinate, avoid this medication.
You should not take this medication if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the following: Lotensin, thiazide diuretics such as HydroDIURIL and Esidrix, ACE inhibitors such as captopril and Vasotec, or sulfa or other sulfonamide-derived drugs such as Bactrim and Septra. If you have a history of allergies or asthma, you may be at greater risk for an allergic reaction to this medication. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.
FOR WOMEN: ACE inhibitors such as the one in Lotensin have been shown to cause injury and even death to the unborn child when used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters. If you are pregnant, your doctor should discontinue this medication as soon as possible. If you plan to become pregnant, make sure your doctor knows you are taking this medication. The diuretic component of Lotensin can cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) and abnormal bruising and bleeding in newborns.
Lotensin appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. To avoid potential harm to the baby, you'll need to choose between breastfeeding and continuing your treatment with Lotensin.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: decreased amount of urine passed; difficulty breathing, or swallowing; dizziness; lightheadedness or fainting spells; redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth; skin rash, itching; swelling of your face or tongue; swelling of your legs or ankles; uneven or fast heart beat.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):cough; headache; nausea; tiredness.

Generic Lotensin (Benazapril) Drug Interactions

Benazepril should not be taken by people with a known allergy to ACE inhibitors. Swelling of the facial tissues and even the upper airways has been reported with ACE inhibitors on very rare occasions, and can lead to serious breathing difficulties. Benazepril can interact with diuretics (water pills) and other blood pressure medicines to cause an excessive drop in blood pressure, which can result in symptoms of weakness, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Worsening of kidney function has been reported with ACE inhibitors, especially in patients with severe heart failure or pre-existing kidney disease. Combining benazepril with potassium supplements, potassium containing salt substitutes, and potassium conserving diuretics such as amiloride (Moduretic), spironolactone (Aldactone), and triamterene (Dyazide, Maxzide), can lead to dangerously high blood levels of potassium. Indomethacin (Indocin) and possibly other anti-inflammatory medications may decrease the blood pressure lowering effect of benazepril.
In rare instances, low white blood cell counts have been reported with the use of another ACE inhibitor. Low white blood cells increase the patient's risk of infections. When taken with lithium, benazepril can increase lithium to toxic levels in the blood. Safe use in children is not established. It is not habit forming.

Additional Information

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Benazepril may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities and notify your doctor. Also use caution when rising from a sitting or lying position.
Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may further lower blood pressure and increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking benazepril.
