Is an anti-diabetic drug from the thiazolidinedione class. Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) improves your ability to control blood glucose by making your body more sensitive to insulin.

What is Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) used for?

Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) is used in adult patients (particularly those who are overweight) who have non insulindependent diabetes (type 2 diabetes, also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or maturity onset diabetes). Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) may be used on its own in patients where metformin (an antidiabetes medicine) is not suitable. Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) may also be used with metformin in type 2 diabetes patients who are not satisfactorily controlled on metformin alone, or with sulphonylurea (another antidiabetes medicine) when metformin is not suitable. Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) may also be used with both metformin and a sulphonylurea, in patients (particularly overweight patients) with insufficient control despite dual oral therapy.

Active Ingredients: rosiglitazone maleate
Other Ingredients: hypromellose 2910, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol 3000, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide, triacetin, and 1 or more of the following: synthetic red and yellow iron oxides and talc.
Mechanism of Action: Pharmacological studies in animal models indicate that Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone)Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) improves sensitivity to insulin in muscle and adipose tissue and inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis. Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone)Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) maleate is not chemically or functionally related to the sulfonylureas, the biguanides, or the alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed and protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How to take Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone)?

Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) can be given with or without food and the dose is adjusted to give the best control. The recommended starting dose is 4 mg daily, given as a single dose, or in two 2 mg doses. This dose may need to be increased to 8 mg daily after eight weeks if better blood glucose control is needed, given as a single dose, or in two 4 mg doses.
When OVERDOSE is suspected seek emergency medical. You may have signs of low blood sugar, such as hunger, headache, confusion, irritability, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, tremors, sweating, fast heartbeat, seizure (convulsions), fainting, or coma.

What to do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Who should not take Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone)?

Do not use Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) if you have type 1 diabetes, or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment with insulin).
    Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have:
  • congestive heart failure or heart disease;
  • a history of heart attack or stroke;
  • liver disease; or
  • eye problems caused by diabetes.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone), or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.
Some women using Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) have started having menstrual periods, even after not having a period for a long time due to a medical condition. You may be able to get pregnant if your periods restart. Talk with your doctor about the need for birth control. FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not take Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone).
  • More common side effects may include: Back pain, fatigue, headache, high blood sugar, low blood sugar, respiratory tract infections, sinus inflammation, swelling
  • Less common side effects may include: Anemia (low blood cell count), diarrhea
  • Rare side effects may include: Congestive heart failure

Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) Drug Interactions

    You may be more likely to have hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) if you are taking Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) with other drugs that raise blood sugar. Drugs that can raise blood sugar include:
  • isoniazid;
  • diuretics (water pills);
  • steroids (prednisone and others);
  • phenothiazines (Compazine and others);
  • thyroid medicine (Synthroid and others);
  • birth control pills and other hormones;
  • seizure medicines (Dilantin and others); and
  • diet pills or medicines to treat asthma, colds or allergies.
    You may be more likely to have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if you are taking Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) with other drugs that lower blood sugar. Drugs that can lower blood sugar include:
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs);
  • aspirin or other salicylates (including Pepto-Bismol);
  • sulfa drugs (Bactrim and others);
  • a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI);
  • beta-blockers (Tenormin and others); or
  • probenecid (Benemid).
    Some medications may interact with Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone). Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:
  • gemfibrozil (Gemcor); orGeneric Avandia (Rosoglitazone)
  • rifampin (Rifater, Rifadin, Rimactane).
If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to take Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone), or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring.
There may be other drugs not listed that can affect Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone). Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Always remember that Generic Avandia (Rosoglitazone) is an aid to, not a substitute for, good diet, weight loss, and exercise. Failure to follow a sound diet and exercise plan can lead to serious complications, such as dangerously high or low blood sugar levels.
